Halloween actually isn’t my thing, but Fall? Oh man! Don’t even get me started! That’s my season. There’s nothing like those cooler days!
When my kids asked if we were going to decorate for halloween, I paused and thought about how spooky decor wasn’t really my thing. The thought of graveyards, black crows, and plastic spiders everywhere really did not have me getting in the halloween spirit. But, After thinking about it, and thinking how we do usually decorate for all of the other different holidays, I was sure there was a way to make halloween decor simple, and not so spooky! Farmhouse style, of course.
I also thought, by combining it with the neutral tones of our fall decorations we already had from our small front porch fall decor, that this halloween decor idea could take on the simple ‘not so spooky’ farmhouse, cottage style in no time!
DIY Farmhouse halloween decor ideas for a small front porch!
Using giant spiders, a variety of pumpkins and little personal touch, here are a few ideas we came up with for our farmhouse halloween decor.
The Bats
I knew from seeing countless ideas on Pinterest of these little paper bats flying around peoples homes, that they would be apart of our halloween decorations. I knew they weren’t as creepy as most halloween decor and actually, they were kind of cute. So, of course they made their way onto the front door (and then, even the white halloween mantel we had inside!)
Pumpkins
Of course pumpkins would play a role in our halloween decor. Real pumpkins, faux pumpkins, we love them all! Plus, We had a lot of pumpkins on the porch already from our fall decorations.
Every year, we head to the pumpkin patch to pick out a pumpkin to carve. We set up a halloween table with a giant table cloth in our backyard and got to carving! The pumpkins always make their way to the front porch to show off our pumpkin carving skills anyhow, so I thought, it would be the perfect time to use them in our halloween decorations, too! We even went the extra mile to add the tea light inside so they would light up at night.
Pulling up to the house to the lit up jack o lantern faces really gave me a nostalgia feeling. Like it was halloween night and I was a kid again. Maybe I am in the halloween spirit after all!
The spiders
When I asked my kids to come up with a few creative ideas of what they would like to see in our not so spooky Halloween decor, I expected some DIY halloween decorations to be in our future.
To my surprise, they had one rule-they wanted giant spiders crawling up the house. I could work with that. That seemed easy and simple enough for me.
After looking at hobby lobby for some fall accent pillows earlier in the month, I knew we would be making DIY halloween pillows. Have you priced pillows lately? No thanks! Using the same idea from this farmhouse style pillow, I sewed a simple square pillow out of scarp fabric and we painted a jack o lantern face on it using fabric paint. It was SO simple, and the kids got to be involved. I loved how it turned out!
DIY farmhouse halloween decor ideas, cottage style!
After decorating the porch, we decided to bring in a few items to make our cottage style home just a little spooky.
I also used the same idea from this DIY farmhouse bunny garland to make halloween garlands in the shape of little ghost. PS..it requires no sewing. Only hot glue! We hung them right across our white halloween mantel.
DIY farmhouse style halloween trick or treat bags!
After seeing a post on instagram of a lady making her kids halloween bags to collect candy in, I thought how sweet it would be to create my kids their own halloween bags instead of buying the plastic ones like we do every year.
Not only would they double as decor while hanging up in our home during the month of October, they could be passed down, hopefully for generations to come. I love a good family heirloom.
You can see a step by step by step tutorial on how to make these DIY halloween bags here!
Since we don’t get trick or treaters where we live (we live off a Main Street, making it dangerous) We went to a local neighborhood to trick or treat, and ended the night in our courtyard area (coming soon to the blog) surrounded by family, a good fire, and a big pot of chili and cornbread.
I may not have been in the halloween spirit to start, but I defiantly think we will continue decorating our little cottage for Halloween for years to come. It was a fun way to spend time with the kids, and after all, the giant spiders kinda grew on me.
Well, until next year ghouls!
