Simple farmhouse fall decorating for a small front porch

by

White mums, heirloom pumpkins, wicker baskets and dried corn stalks. Today I am sharing my simple farmhouse fall decorating ideas for a small front porch using both natural and simple decor.

It’s September 1st–Can I say it?

I’m going to say it,

IT’S FALL YALL!

Eeek, I patiently (ok, not so patiently) wait for fall all year long. It’s my favorite time of year. Once August hits, I start sourcing my decorations and pumpkins. By September 1st, summer is out the door (even if Louisiana temps say otherwise) and my 3 ingredient pumpkin muffins are on the table.

One year I actually plan to plant and grow my own heirloom variety of pumpkins here in our small backyard but for now, I source my pumpkins locally here at a farm. Scroll to the bottom of this post to see a list of local friends that helped me create this simple fall farmhouse look. ps…I also share my favorite thrift store. If you can’t find a local farm, don’t fret. You can find them at your local grocery store or pumpkin patches too.

With a small cottage style home, comes a small porch. When deciding on front porch decor for fall, I knew I wanted to do things the simple way, budget friendly, and cozy. Traditional fall colors aren’t my favorite but something about those green pumpkins, I just can’t get enough.

So to keep my front porch decor budget friendly first, I gathered together a list of natural elements I could use, I started with this list of front porch ideas

  • Fall Plants (fall mums, white flowers, ornamental kale, etc)
  • Dried corn stalks (dried corn stalks also make such a beautiful fall wreath, perfect for a fall seasonal look for your front door, just add them to grapevine wreaths, you can find the grapevine wreaths at thrift stores.)
  • Lots of Pumpkins (heirloom and white pumpkins varieties are my favorite)
  • A pile of natural fire wood logs.
  • Fall foliage, dried plants (hydrangeas, branches, etc)
  • hay bales

If you don’t have hydrangeas, a great way to get some is to ask your friends/neighbors. Most don’t mind sharing cuttings. This is actually how I got mine.

Next, I “shopped my house” for simple things such as buckets for the plants, pillows, throw blankets, anything I could think of to accompany the white, green and wood tone theme I had going on in my head.

Shopping my home is just a fancy way to say I gathered unused items from around the living room, our shop, the backyard, etc. I always do this before buying any new (well new to me-thrifted, of course) decorations for seasonal decorating. PS…I’m too cheap to buy new!

Here is what I found when I “shopped my house” first,

  • Old Metal Tin buckets
  • Whicker baskets–I had lots! I had a friend show up on my door step with a smile and ‘I thought you might like these’ warm message one morning. I didn’t like them, I LOVED them!
  • A mustard colored throw blanket
  • Gingham fabric, I sewed these ruffle pillow covers for my porch swing using a tutorial over the blog TIDBITS, see the tutorial HERE.
  • Old wooden stool

Although our fall farmhouse front porch decorating is simple, I believe it is impactful.

The warm tones from the wood and wicker mixed with the white mums and muted fall colored pumpkins really come together for a cozy, cottage feel.

Not to mention, they all lend themselves well to the pretty colors of the fall season.

Tell me what’s sweeter than a kitten waiting to hop up into your lap on that crisp fall morning as you watch the leaves fall from the porch swing with a warm beverage in hand! Meet one of our backyard farm animals, the snuggliest kitten you will ever meet, named none the less, Cozy.

Local friends,

You can find a variety of heirloom pumpkins and dried cornstalks minutes from each other on the outskirts of Vivian, near Mcleod, Texas.

I suggested making a day out of it and going to my favorite thrift store in all the land–Lighthouse thrift in Vivian, LA and hoping (12 minutes away) over to saige acres farm for a U pick flower and pumpkin patch, then ending your trip on caddo lake with the BEST burger you will ever eat, at Drift Inn Bait & Tackle. If you’re wondering how I spend my Fridays during the fall season, you just might see me there. 😉

Heirloom pumpkins and fresh flowers: Saige Acres Flower Farm, Meagan Oberley. You can contact them over on their Facebook page or by phone, 318-525-6981.

Dried Corn Stalk, wreathes, dried corn: Lizzie Owens Wilder. Contact her directly on Facebook or by text, 318-918-0508 .
