I’ve linked a few of the simple pantry items here, since I’m often asked about them.
Small Cottage Pantry & Coffee Bar
When you live in a small house, every inch of the kitchen has to work harder. Our little blue cottage kitchen is full of charm but for a long time it lacked one important thing: functional pantry storage.
We didn’t have a traditional pantry—just large kitchen cabinets where food, baking supplies, and pantry staples were crammed in and often forgotten. Over time, it became clear that the space wasn’t serving us well.
This pantry and coffee bar update wasn’t a fast makeover. It came from living in our small kitchen, noticing what wasn’t working, and slowly creating a functional, cottage-style pantry that fit our home and our routines.
The Problem With Pantry Storage in a Small Kitchen

Before this update, our kitchen storage technically existed—but it wasn’t efficient. Without a pantry, food storage was scattered, and the deep cabinets made it easy for items to disappear to the back.
In a small kitchen, clutter and poor organization can quickly feel overwhelming—especially during busy mornings.
We wanted:
- better pantry organization
- easier access to everyday items
- a kitchen that felt calm and functional
These were the storage swaps that made the biggest difference for us:
Why We Chose Open Shelving for Our Cottage Pantry

Removing cabinet doors felt intimidating at first. We worried about losing storage space and exposing clutter. But instead of losing storage, we found that open shelving actually helped us gain it.
By seeing what we had, we became more intentional about how we stored food and kitchen essentials.

This small kitchen pantry now works in zones:
- Lower cabinets act as the pantry and are hidden behind a simple curtain. It also stores our microwave (and saves counter space, a plus in a small kitchen!)
- Upper shelves hold everyday pantry staples and baking supplies.
The curtain keeps the space efficient while adding softness and cottage charm.
How We Store Pantry Staples in Our Open Shelves
The top shelves are both practical and beautiful—exactly what we wanted for a working kitchen.

Here’s how we organize this small pantry:
- Rice, flour, and sugar stored in glass jars
- Baking supplies kept within easy reach
- Potatoes and onions stored in baskets on the shelf
Nothing gets forgotten, and everything is easy to access. Despite initial concerns, we didn’t lose storage—we gained functionality.
Pantry Storage We Use & Love
- Glass jars with airtight lids
- Tall canisters for flour/sugar
- Medium jars for rice/grains
- Wire or woven baskets for potatoes/onions
- Hanging produce storage
Keeping dry goods in glass jars has helped us stay organized and avoid buying duplicates.
Creating a Coffee Bar in a Small Kitchen

Because we lack counter space, we also needed a dedicated coffee bar. Giving coffee its own home has made mornings noticeably smoother. Something I look forward to in the morning.
When everything has a place—coffee maker, mugs, and supplies—there’s no shuffling or rearranging just to start the day. In a small home, organization directly affects how enjoyable everyday routines feel.

Giving coffee its own home made mornings easier—and these are similar pieces to what we use.
- Small expresso machine
- Mug rack
- Ceramic mug
- Canister for coffee beans
- Tray for coffee station styling
Where We Store Pots and Pans
This is one of the most common questions I get.
Our pots and pans are stored in the lower kitchen cabinets, not in the pantry or coffee bar area. Separating storage by function helped keep this space efficient and clutter-free.
What color are the cabinets?

We painted the pantry cabinets Backwoods by Sherwin Williamssimply because we wanted to use what we already had. We had an entire gallon of leftover paint, and using what’s on hand often makes the most sense in a small home.
The deep green color turned out beautifully, though it can feel a bit heavy in our small kitchen. In the future, we may repaint this space a soft cottage blue to brighten it—but for now, it works, and that matters most.
Inspired by Working Kitchens, Not Perfection
This pantry and coffee bar were inspired by old working kitchens—spaces designed for use, not perfection. Nothing here happened overnight. We lived in the house first, paid attention to our habits, and let the space tell us what it needed.
Open shelving in a small kitchen isn’t about styling alone. It’s about visibility, accessibility, and ease.
A Functional Pantry for Small Cottage Living
This pantry and coffee bar update added:
- more storage
- better organization
- improved daily routines
- warmth and cottage charm
It’s not finished forever, and it doesn’t need to be. It works for our life right now—and that’s the beauty of slow, thoughtful home changes.
If there’s one thing this space taught me, it’s this:
small changes, made thoughtfully, can completely change how a home feels.
