Watch my step by step video to start making your own handmade banners! P.S.. I like my projects perfectly imperfect.

In this tutorial I will show you a simple way to make a Fabric banner out of drop cloth,  perfect for all special occasions!

What can I use my Banner for?

A fabric banner would be a great addition to:

  • everyday decor
  • a child’s room
  • birthdays
  • holidays
  • baby shower

01 | How to make a Fabric Banner – sewing method

First and for most, I am not very technical with my sewing. I stick to straight lines most of the time and am a beginner myself which is why I love simple diy projects like this one.

So, lets get started with our first method, the sewing method. This is very beginner friendly (like one straight line beginner-friendly!) and completely customizable.

Use scrap fabric, an old cutter quilt, or simply fabric coordinating to a holiday or a birthday party for your banner pieces.

Supplies list

  • drop cloth or other fabric
  • Jute
  • sewing machine
  • sewing pins (helpful but optional)
  • scissors

Instructions

  1. Cut your desired amount of triangles out of your fabric or leftover fabric scraps. The size of your triangles will be based on how large you will want your final fabric bunting to be.
  1. Fold the top edge of each of the triangles over about an inch, trim off the extra little bit that sticks out.
  2. Cut the jute to the length you want your fabric banner to be.
  3. Pin your fabric onto the jute using straight pins.

4. Using the sewing machine, sew the jute onto your fabric using one straight line. Leaving enough room to freely move your fabric triangle back and forth.

That’s it! Just hang it up.

02 | How to make a fabric Banner – No sew method

My first ever fabric banner was one I made and hot glued for my daughters’ remodeled white and pink playhouse. Nearly two years later, It is still hanging up outside on the playhouse. Im impressed.

So, this no sew method will easily hold up for whatever the task may be! Birthdays, holidays (like 4th of July!) or simply just hanging in your home decor.

I even thought about hanging one on my chicken coop considering its made out of scrap fabric anyhow! I love making all things lovely, Yes, even chicken coops. See for yourself below!

  1. Cut your desired amount of triangles out of your fabric or leftover fabric scraps. The size of your triangles will be based on how large you will want your final fabric bunting to be.
  2. Next step, Fold the top edge of each of the triangles over about an inch, trim off the extra little bit that sticks out.
  3. Cut the jute to the length you want your fabric banner to be.
  4. Pin your fabric onto the jute using straight pins.
  5. Remove pins as you glue. Start by gluing a strip of glue across your fabric, folding the top of the banner over and pressing down. Leaving enough room to freely move your fabric triangle back and forth.

How easy was that?

The best part is these fabric banners are COMPLETELY customizable and a great way to use up different fabrics you may have laying around. Take it a step further and use letter stencils on your banner like seen HERE.
