Ever wondered how to tea stain American flags for a Vintage look? Come along while I show you how to DIY your own vintage American flags!

When I decided to share this DIY vintage flag tutorial with you guys, I had no idea it was flag day. So First, Happy Flag day friends!

With 4th of July quickly aproaching, I was inspired this week to tea stain small American flags to place around our home. Normally, my seasonal patriotic decorating starts Memorial Day weekend, going through Fourth of July, and wrapping it up in august to bring in fall items.

Adding simple seasonal items in with your decor is such an easy way to add charm to your home. I love the vintage American look for the summer, with Memorial Day and Fourth of July, what feels more American than flags?

Supplies – DIY vintage Flags

  • Small American flags
  • Glass or ceramic dish
  • Tea bags (3)
  • Tea pot
  • Water

The small flags are sold all over the place this time of year. I’ve seen them at grocery stores, amazon and dollar stores too.

First, brew your pot of tea. I filled my pot half way with water, added 3 tea bags and let boil for 10 minutes.

Place the flags in a glass or ceramic dish.

Once the tea is ready, carefully pour over the flags until the flags are completely submerged.

Allow the flags to soak for 15 minutes.

Remove the flags and allow them to dry. I placed my flags in the sun to dry.

Before and After – DIY vintage flags

Here you can see the before and after of the bright red, white and blue flags vs the older, vintage looking flags after being tea stained. Both flags are beautiful, but the vintage feel of the tea stained American flag now goes more with my cottage feel decor.

How to style your DIY Vintage flags

A few ways to style your DIY vintage flags after tea staining:

  • Stick your flags in a white ceramic pitcher-my all time favorite thrift find is white ceramic pitchers, I am always on the hunt for these. I like to cluster a few flags into my ceramic pitchers.
  • Mix in with thrift finds-mix in with faux hydrangeas, baby’s breath, old wooden spoons, wooden rolling pins, small crocks.
  • Use on your front porch.
  • Use in centerpieces, coffee tables, old crocks.

I love how simple but impactful these vintage flags look displayed in various places around our home, It really brings the vintage patriotic feel in while not being overwhelming. What screams summer more than Vintage flags, White pitchers and Fresh flowers?! Okay, maybe a backyard BBQ or some fresh watermelon from the stand off the side of the road, YUM!
