Our backyard family photo session

I wanted to share our backyard family photo session here for others that may be thinking about doing this nontradional form of family photos. If you are wanting to capture your family in a way that captures the rhyme of your daily life, then a backyard family photo session is the way to go.

If you know me, then you know the simple things in life are what make my heart sing. You would also know that our family does a whole lot of backyard living. It’s where we spend most of our day’s together.

It’s where we share moment’s with our family, host dinner parties and watch the kids splash around in the stock tank pool. It’s also where we have dinner most night’s during the summer, especially homemade pizza nights.

Simple backyard living photoshoot ideas

When I decided to have a lifestyle family photo session in our backyard, I knew I wanted the photos to be ordinary and special all at the same time. I wanted the photos to document our families story. Our daily life and the way we interact within our home (or backyard)

We started the photos by making homemade pizza on the grill. I helped the kids roll their pizzas, while my husband managed the grill. While the pizza was cooking, we hoped over to the kids playhouse where they each held one of our backyard farm animals. We let our baby goats out and then the chickens too.

There was no way we were missing out on photos in the garden! This was our first year having a successful garden and the kids really enjoyed picking the fresh veggies.

Family photos on the front porch

After visiting the garden, we went around front and captured our family on the front porch of our home. This home is so special to us. It is our first home. I still remember the day we put in an offer on it. It was so small, my husband was skeptical if we even would all fit.

But something about this little blue house, I couldn’t live without it. It was like I was meant to be here, in this humble little home. Sooo, we bought it! I am so glad we did. I have learned so much during our time here. I have learned less is more. I have learned how to be happy exactly where you are and how to make the best of small spaces.

This little home has pushed my creativity to the max and brought my true passions in life alive! I know one day we will out grow this little house but I don’t know if I will ever be able to part with her. Air BNB, maybe?

Backyard family photo session outfit ideas

When deciding on what to wear in our backyard family photo session, I knew I wanted us to all be as comfortable as possible so we went with casual outfits.

I started with a linen dress but ended in an outfit similar to what I wear on a normal summer day in the backyard, a tank top and my mom jean shorts. The kids got changed into their swim suits to swim in the pool.

Ending the evening with family photos in our courtyard

My favorite part of our backyard summer family photo session was definitely when the kids got in the stock tank pool and splashed around like they love to do on a normal summer night around here. We cut up some watermelon for the kids. My husband and I made some sweet tea to enjoy together while the kids splashed around.

Our courtyard area is our favorite hangout spot in the backyard. It was only right that is where we ended the night. Under our favorite lights, in our favorite lawn chairs.

I will forever cherish these family photos. I want to thank Marli at Marli Johnson Photography for capturing these special moment’s for us. We will forever hold these photos dear to our heart!

Friends! I hope you found some inspiration to capture your own families, just living life in your own backyards.
