Baking birthday party | cottage style!
A spoonful of friends, 1 cup of love, 2 cups of laughter, a dash of memories and a dozen of fun, were mixing up some birthday fun!
It’s no surprise that I collided two of my most favorite things-throwing unique themed birthday parties for my kids and my love for #cottagecore design. When my youngest daughter, Blake, came to me and said “I want a baking party momma”, My heart fluttered and my mind immediately overflowed with ideas. Keeping my mouth shut, I asked her what she wanted to do at the baking party and she said “make cakes!”
Now, I am not going to lie. Making cakes with a bunch of 4 year olds seemed a little intimating at first. But the idea of “Bake with Blake” seemed to good to pass up so there I was, two days before the party baking 14 miniature cakes, a 3 layer birthday cake, 20+ mini pies, a homemade apple pie, a large batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies, a bundt cake, lemon poppy seed mini loafs, and a partridge in a pear tree. Did I mention I am the worst cake maker ever? Like..they turn out bad. But somehow there I was, committing to 17+ cakes.
Now that’s not all, imagine all that being baked in a home with less than 900 sqft… I may or may not have had flour in my hair. Was it worth it? Absolutely! It almost even beat my top party yet, our chicken themed birthday from last year…Hey! I said almost.
Oh yeah! I forgot to mention-it was raining the day of the party. For some reason every year on the day of my middle child’s birthday parties, it rains and I don’t mean cupcake sprinkles..it pours! But no matter what, with flour in my hair and mud on my feet, this party was going on!
Cottage style baking birthday party decor
When we decided on this theme, I knew decorating would be a breeze considering my whole home is decorated in cottage style decor. I always start with the basics of my party planning with a few small details, such as the birthday invitation, then plan the rest of the party around those. I started with fresh flowers, a sweet pink color, mini pies, and an old cottage kitchen in mind.
It didn’t take long for the rest of the sweet details to flood my brain such as:
- Kitchen aid mixer filled with fresh flowers and vintage rolling pins
- Vintage wooden spoons and serving ware-vintage cake stands, vintage plates, an old cookie jar, vintage strainer used as a bowl, anything you might find in a grandmas little country kitchen.
- Cottage style gingham fabric– used for table cloth and curtains on the mini kitchen.
- Mini aprons–doubling as decor and an essential when baking with 15 young children.
- Cake decorating station-complete with pink icing, dried florals and fresh berries.
- Cottage style fabric bunting-using an arrange of fabric, I sewed a cottage style fabric bunting to hang above the kids ‘tea party’ table.
Doubling as a gift, decor and entertainment, we gifted our daughter her very own ‘mud kitchen’ for her birthday! This was a big hit with the kids, plus has provided hours of entertainment since. It resides in our courtyard, allowing us to hangout in the evening while the kids make mud pies, see more on our mud kitchen at the bottom of this post.
Cottage style baking birthday party favors
Who doesn’t love mini pies? No one. Absolutely no one. All the details of a real pie, only little. Can we all agree everything miniature is always cuter?
When thinking of favors to send home with the kids, I knew it had to be a baked good. At first, I thought of sending mini jars of fruit jams complete with a little bow tied around the jar. This was an adorable idea but those stinking cute mini pies wouldn’t leave my mind.
We ended up sending each kid home with a little bag containing a mini baked pie, a small rolling pin and a cute little bow and hand-printed labels that stated “Baked By Blake” and the flavor of the pie.
Now I am all for homemade baked goods, but nearing the end of baking for two days straight, I opted for convenience over my own personal preference of ‘everything taste better homemade’ and used premade crust for my mini pie (gasp). These were a such a breeze to make this way.
Supplies to make your own mini pies:
- Mini pie pans
- Phillsbury premade Pie crust, 2 count
- A jar lid to make your pie cutout or a circle cookie cutter
- Pie filling (we used cherry, blueberry, apple and peach)
Using your jar lid to cut the perfect circle, take your pie crust and set it in your mini pie pan. Fill pie with your pie filling. Cut another piece of crust with your lid, choose your preferred design ( a simple X in the middle will do) and set it on top. Repeat until you have reached your desired amount of mini pies (never too many, am I right?) Bake at 350 for 25-30 mins. Enjoy!
Baking birthday party Food ideas
What kind of food do you serve at a bakery birthday party? Why, baked goods of course! Combining baked goods with cottage style, we of course went full cottage bakery and served cute little foods such as
- homemade apple pies
- heart shaped PB&J’s for the littles
- handmade mini pies
- homemade chocolate chip cookies
- An old-fashioned bundt cake sprinkled powder sugar
- Lemon poppy seed, banana chocolate chip and chocolate chip mini baked bread loafs.
- 3 layer white birthday cake with cream cheese buttercream icing and fresh fruits pilled high to the sky-this was a request of the birthday girl, “Momma I want a BIG cake with lots of fruit!”
I spent nearly two days baking all of these goods. My house truly smelled of a true cottage kitchen..but man was I whooped! This was the first birthday I had made my kids birthday cake, I usually buy them.
Naturally, I chose the birthday where I had a million other baked goods to make to try my hand at it. Thank you Jesus, it turned out okay and I had a “I did it! I finally made it in motherhood” moment.
Last year, at my sons First year down football party, I made him a smash cake. When I thought I had everything under control, I looked around to find the cake ON THE FLOOR! It had fallen out of the fridge. Ouch. Welp, You win some, you lose some.
Cottage style baking birthday party details
Now, my favorite part of this cottage style bakery birthday party was watching all the littles get into their little aprons and decorate cakes. Each kid was equipped with a 6 in cake, a piping bag, a wooden popsicle stick to smooth the icing, dried florals and fresh berries to assemble their very own cake. And the best parts is, they got to take their little cakes home in cake boxes! It was really so much fun. A true recipe for a good time!
My favorite details from the party had to be the flowers in the kitchen aid mixer, the mini pies, and the cake decorating.
I would wear flour in my hair, mud on my feet and bake 17+ cakes all over again if I had too.
Now, the mud kitchen
Not knowing it would rain, we really nailed this one. Doubling as a gift, decor and entertainment, we gifted our daughter her very own ‘mud kitchen’ for her birthday!
This was a big hit with the kids, plus has provided hours of entertainment since. It resides in our courtyard, allowing us to hangout in the evening while the kids make loads of mud pies, yum.
We found the mud kitchen as a wooden kitchen on Facebook marketplace for $80. Adding a touch of paint, knobs and some old kitchen utensils I no longer needed, we had the cutest little kitchen for the party that later, had doubled as a mud kitchen for our family. Such a neat idea.
Wrapping up the final details of the party, I pray my little cupcake always sprinkles her sweetness on those around her.
She’s an old soul, kitchen dancing, homemade cooking kinda gal. I loved nothing more than to celebrate her in the sweetest way possible, by making ‘Bake with Blake’ a reality for her, Happy birthday to our little baker! Never stop mixing up your sweetness.
