These homemade oven baked croutons use only three basic ingredients!

  • Leftover, stale bread (or fresh bread) – we always have leftover bread from using our bread machine, instead of throwing it in the trash, I always opt to make some fresh homemade croutons instead.
  • Seasonings- Garlic powder, dried parsley flakes kosher salt & black pepper is what we use. Feel free to try difference seasonings for different flavors such as, Parmesan cheese or an Italian seasoning.
  • Melted butter- you could use an oil instead such as avocado oil or an extra-virgin olive oil.

Making these yummy crunchy croutons at home is great way to use up any kind of bread but especially old bread!

Sourdough bread, stale bread, white sandwich bread, a crusty loaf of bread, a loaf of French bread, whole wheat bread, a fresh loaf of bread, the options are truly endless!

Once you try this homemade crouton recipe, I promise you will never want to buy store-bought croutons ever again. They are really that yummy.

To start, using leftover or fresh bread, you will cut (or tear) your bread into small cubes.

Next, using a large bowl, melt your butter.

Once your butter is melted, dump in your cubed bread. Sprinkle with your preferred seasonings (or salt, pepper, dried parsley, garlic powder)

Toss to coat.

How to serve oven baked croutons

Toss in your salad-My favorite and most obvious way to use up these homemade garlic croutons is in green salads. Pair your croutons with some homemade caesar salad dressing and you’re in for a real treat.

Hosting- Wow your guest with these restaurant quality croutons served with some warm soup.

As a gift- Another way to use up your crispy croutons would be to gift them! Wrap your croutons in a little mason jar topped with a bow to gift with a warm soup or fresh salad for new parents, or a sick family member. I would even be delighted to receive homemade croutons in a gift basket.

How to store your homemade croutons

Store croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5-7 days. Although I am certain they won’t make it this far, another option would be to turn your leftover croutons into bread crumbs.  Just use a rolling pin or food processor to break those croutons up into your preferred size of breadcrumbs.

You can also freeze croutons in a freezer bag or container for up to 6 weeks.

Man, we are really preventing food waste here.

Now tell me, are you ever going back to store-bought croutons?
