Ground turkey and gravy over creamy mashed potatoes — a cozy, nostalgic comfort food recipe inspired by my grandma and made perfect for busy weeknights.

A plate of ground turkey and gravy served over mashed potatoes with peas and carrots.

This dish has been passed down in my family for generations. My grandma always says her mother made a version of this regularly. A simple, filling, and made with what you had on hand.

To me, it tastes like shepherd’s pie or a cross between a hamburger steak and gravy, just in a more comforting, spoon-able form. I recently made it using ground turkey while trying to eat a little lighter, and it turned out so good I had to write it down and share it with you guys!

No Oven Required

ound turkey and gravy served in a rustic bowl, ready for a comforting family dinner.

This is a no-bake recipe, made entirely on the stovetop using a skillet. It’s perfect for busy weeknights, hot days when you don’t want to turn on the oven, or when you just want a simple, comforting meal without extra steps.

Everything comes together in one pan on the stove top, making cleanup easy and dinner stress-free.

Ingredients

Like most old-fashioned comfort food, this recipe doesn’t require anything fancy. Just simple ingredients cooked with care!

Ground Turkey & Gravy

  • 1 lb ground lean ground turkey (or ground beef – see notes below)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely diced
  • 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1–2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 packet brown gravy mix
  • 1½–2 cups water
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots (optional, but recommended)
  • Olive oil or butter, for cooking

Creamy Mashed Potatoes

  • 2½–3 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ¼–½ cup heavy cream (to taste)
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • 1 heaping spoonful mayonnaise
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Mashed Potatoes

  1. Add potatoes to a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil.
  2. Cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  3. Drain and return to the pot.
  4. Add butter, heavy cream, sour cream, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper.
  5. Mash with a potato masher until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning and cream as needed.
  6. Cover and keep warm.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Turkey & Gravy

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of olive oil or a pat of butter.
  2. Add diced onion and cook until soft and translucent.
  3. Add ground turkey and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  4. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  5. Stir in Worcestershire sauce.
  6. Sprinkle the brown gravy mix evenly over the meat.
  7. Slowly add water, stirring constantly, until a smooth gravy forms.
  8. Simmer for 5–10 minutes, until thickened.
  9. Stir in frozen peas and carrots and cook until heated through.

Spoon a generous portion of creamy mashed potatoes onto a plate, top with the ground turkey and gravy, and finish with a small sprig of rosemary if you’re feeling fancy.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s comfort food at its finest — warm, filling, and nostalgic
  • Budget-friendly and made with pantry staples
  • Flexible: use ground turkey or ground beef
  • Perfect for weeknights but cozy enough for Sunday dinners
  • A great way to sneak in veggies for the whole family.

This is the kind of meal that feels like home the moment it hits the table.

The Secret to Extra-Creamy Mashed Potatoes (Yes, It’s Mayo!)

I have to pause here and share my favorite mashed potato secret — mayonnaise.

A dear friend of mine from down south shared this tip with me years ago, and I’ve been making my mashed potatoes this way ever since. Just one spoonful of mayo added to your cooked potatoes adds a subtle richness and creaminess without tasting like mayonnaise at all. It blends right in and gives the potatoes that ultra-smooth, restaurant-quality texture.

Combined with butter, sour cream, and heavy cream, it truly makes the creamiest mashed potatoes I’ve ever had — and now it’s a non-negotiable in my kitchen.

Ground Turkey vs. Ground Beef

While I made this version with ground turkey, this dish was originally made with ground beef in my family.

  • Ground turkey keeps it a bit lighter but still incredibly flavorful
  • Ground beef gives a richer, more traditional hamburger-steak-and-gravy flavor

Both work beautifully, so use what you have on hand or what fits your season of life.

Make-Ahead Instructions

This recipe is perfect for prepping ahead, especially on busy weeks.

To make ahead:

  • Prepare the mashed potatoes and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days
  • Cook the turkey and gravy mixture and store separately for up to 3 days
  • Reheat both gently on the stovetop or in the microwave, adding a splash of milk or water as needed

How to Store Leftovers

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator
  • Keeps well for 3–4 days
  • Reheat slowly to maintain the creamy texture

Reheating tip:
Add a splash of milk, cream, or broth when reheating to loosen the gravy and potatoes back up.

Can You Freeze This?

Yes — with a small note.

  • The ground turkey and gravy freezes very well for up to 3 months in a freezer-safe container.
  • Mashed potatoes can be frozen, but the texture may change slightly due to the dairy

If freezing, store the gravy mixture separately for best results.

Can I use instant mashed potatoes instead?

Yes, you can, especially on very busy nights. While homemade mashed potatoes give this dish its signature creamy texture, instant potatoes will still pair well with the ground turkey and gravy in a pinch.

Can I make this dairy-free?

The ground turkey and gravy can easily be made dairy-free. For the mashed potatoes, swap the butter and cream for dairy-free alternatives. The mayo can also be replaced with a dairy-free version if needed.

Is this recipe kid-friendly?

Very much so. The flavors are mild, comforting, and familiar, making it a great option for picky eaters. You can always adjust seasoning to suit your family’s preferences.

Tips for the Best Turkey & Gravy

  • Don’t rush browning the turkey — flavor builds here
  • Cook the onions until soft and slightly golden for extra depth
  • Add water slowly when making the gravy to control thickness
  • Taste and adjust seasoning at the end

These small steps make a big difference in flavor.

How This Recipe Fits into a Busy Week

This is one of those meals that works just as well for a quick weeknight dinner as it does for a cozy weekend supper. It’s easy to double, reheats beautifully, and uses ingredients that are affordable and accessible. I love keeping it in rotation during busy seasons when I still want something homemade and comforting on the table.

Why Skillet Meals Are a Staple in Our Home

Skillet meals like this have always been a staple in our kitchen. They’re efficient, forgiving, and perfect for feeding a family without spending hours cooking. There’s something comforting about watching everything come together in one pan — it feels old-fashioned in the best way, just like the meals my grandma used to make.

Serving With:

This comforting dish is hearty on its own, but it pairs beautifully with:

  • Buttered green beans
  • Biscuits or crusty sourdough bread made in the bread machine
  • A simple side salad
  • Steamed broccoli or roasted carrots

A Note on Tradition

Meals like this remind me why I love cooking so much. They don’t come from a cookbook — they come from family, from memory, and from watching someone else make it a hundred times. My grandma learned this dish from her mother, and now I’m sharing it in my own kitchen, just slightly adapted for today.

That’s the beauty of home cooking — it evolves, but the heart stays the same.

Whether you make this with ground turkey or ground beef, this is one of those meals that brings comfort, warmth, and a sense of home to the table. Simple ingredients, cozy flavors, and a little family history all in one dish. This is the kind of cozy meal that doesn’t need to be fancy to be special. It’s cozy, nostalgic, and exactly the type of food that brings people back to the table — just like my grandma and her mother used to make.
