A Cozy little Cottage Christmas home tour
This year I didn’t really start with a plan on how I’d like to decorate, I just knew I really wanted to keep things simple.
Starting there, I used natural elements from around our property such as greenery and pinecones as bowl or vessel fillers, dried orange slices as garlands, fresh cranberries, and homemade ornaments. I later realized I had actually chosen a theme for our cottage style home and didn’t know it, Traditional Christmas.
Going from there, I added ribbons to homemade wreaths, stockings and more. We found a tub of vintage Christmas ornaments at a garage sale for $10 (score) and decorated our entire Christmas tree with it. Adding homemade ornaments from the kids over the years, the tree truly just felt magical.
Now, I know I said I like to keep things simple but have you ever used tinsel on your tree?! There isn’t one thing simple about tinsel but something about it, really does pull at my heart strings. It just feels nostalgic to me. So, following my heart we added that ever so messy but oh so beautiful traditional tinsel to our tree.
A cozy little Cottage Christmas Bedroom
Tiny trees are just cuter. There, I said it.
Every Christmas season, we gift each kid an ornament based on something that makes us think of them, or something they may be into that year, such as a hobby or interest. An ornament to commemorate that year. For example, my oldest daughter is hugely into horses and riding, we gifted her a beautiful horse ornament this year.
Side note: This was my great grandmothers trinket shelf. As a little girl, she would tell me about each trinket she had collected. When she passed, it was passed down to me. Now filled with a few of my favorite trinkets of hers, and a few of my own. The little doll chair is from the dollhouse we built for our daughters.
My girls share a room, so their tree has begun to fill up with each years special ornaments plus some homemade salt dough ornaments that we make each year.
This year, to fill little mans tree since he is only 1, I handmade him a set of ‘baby’s 1st Christmas’ ornaments out of a vintage table cloth I found while thrifting. They are so sweet and I can only hope he will pass them on to his children some day.
A cozy little Cottage Christmas Kitchen
My favorite sweet spot of our 900 sqft small cozy cottage would always be my kitchen. At Christmas time, it feels even more magical. With fresh greenery hanging, tiny handmade handprints on the shelfs, gingerbread houses made by tiny hands, the glow from a small tree and the hanging lights from outside with fresh baked cookies on the stove are what Christmas is about.
Without adding much, I just did a few simple swaps of our normal shelf decorations and added a few Christmas decorations in. This Santa plate was passed down to me and is the plate Santa gets his cookies on each year (I hear Santa loves chunky chocolate chip cookies best)
Something different we did this year was add a ‘hot cocoa bar’ to our counter. My girls would drink a gallon of hot chocolate a day if I’d let them. Since they are getting older, we set up a small self serve hot coco area for them. They have really loved being able to help themselves and although its takes up counter space (which is scarce in little houses) it’s a win for me also.
P.S..open shelves are really becoming a favorite of mine. In a small house, that may sound usual but I feel like it kind of forces me to keep things in order since you know, it can’t be hidden behind a door. PS..don’t look in my closets. Now that, I could use more of!
Let me tell you of my favorite holiday discoveries this season, simmer pots. I know, I know. I am late to the game but when I went to a friends house who had one simmering, oh my goodness. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t been utilizing this technique of making my home smell like the holiday season. The aroma was so cozy and inviting.
Now I am hooked, most of the ingredients I keep stocked here at home anyhow so it was definitely budget friendly. Not to mention, such a clean, natural way to embrace each season. I used oranges, cranberries, apples, fresh cedar, cloves, cinnamon sticks and essential oils. You could also dry your oranges and apples and gift these to family members, teachers or friends. If you have small house like me, the wonderful aroma will really fill up your home. Anyway, back to decorating.
A cozy little Cottage Dining room
Now this is the first I have shown you guys our new DIY shaker peg rail shelf with bead board. I have one regret. Why did I not do this sooner?! The amount of character and functionality is brings to the space truly baffled me. I just knew it would be so beautiful at Christmas time, with stockings hung, greenery lined and paper snowflakes hanging. Ahhh.
One of my kids favorite homemade crafts we do as a family every year is to make paper snowflakes. I love sticking these on our windows, hanging from the ceiling or this year, having them hung from our shelf. This craft its such an easy way to keep the kids busy while doubling as Christmas decorating.
A cozy little cottage Christmas porch
Keeping things real simple, we simply made a wreath for the front door by using the fresh cedar tree clippings in the yard, more dried oranges and fresh holly. We set a small Christmas tree by the front door with wreaths hanging from the windows. We did add lights all the way around each of our windows this year and I think we will do that every year, it’s so beautiful at night.
I also decided to add chopped wood and fresh greenery to a vintage tin bucket by our front door.
and to all a good night.
I hope you enjoyed our cozy little Cottage Christmas home tour of our small 900 sqft home. As always, Thanks for stopping by! Happy Holiday’s and Merry Christmas.
