As I made this pumpkin bread machine recipe, I looked out my window to see a few small leaves fall from the tree. Fall was so close, I could almost smell it. (or maybe, I was smelling it?!)
Disclaimer: This pumpkin bread recipe will fill your home with the smell of homemade pumpkin bread all day, putting you into major fall spirit. You may even get a little crazy and start bringing out the pumpkins and fall scented candles. Hey, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Fall is my jam. The crisp mornings, cozy front porch sitting, the pumpkin spice, everything.
One of my favorite parts of the season is the arrival of football and the season of thanksgiving. Does anyone else feel extra thankful as soon as you feel the first cool morning? It’s like a new version of myself.
I can remember as a child, just feeling that shift of the seasons. It felt so magical for me. I love to recreate that in my own home as I decorate for the season with fresh pumpkins, and natural items like dried cornstalks. You can actually see a tour of how I decorated our small front porch for fall here.

How to make Pumpkin bread with cinnamon crunch topping using the Bread Machine
The first step to making this pumpkin bread is to take your bread machine pan out of the machine. You never want to add ingredients to your bread machine while the pan is still inside. If you accidentally spilled some liquid while pouring into the pan, it could potentially ruin your bread machine.
Next, you will start by adding your wet ingredients to the bread machine pan in the order listed above! Dry ingredients go last when baking with a bread maker. PS..don’t forget to make sure you put your kneading blade inside!
After you have added your ingredients to the bread machine pan, you will add the pan back into the bread machine and select the setting for non-yeasted breads on your bread machine. On my bread maker, it’s called the “cake” setting, but it may be called something like quick bread, sweet bread or sweet quick bread on yours. Just make sure it is the setting that does not require yeast. it is best to check your bread machine Manual to be sure which setting is right for your machine.
While the bread machine does its thing, we will mix together our cinnamon sugar topping.
Most bread machines give off a beep when they are ready for you to add in your ‘mix ins’ such as fruits and nuts. If your machine tells you when to add in your ‘add in’s, ignore it for now. We will sprinkle on the cinnamon topping once the bread maker begins to BAKE the pumpkin loaf so that we get that crunchy cinnamon topping.
Once you know your bread machine has stopped the mixing cycle and has started to bake, you will sprinkle on your cinnamon sugar topping using a spoon and swirl it in, slightly, using a knife or a toothpick.
At this point, your home will smell like fall galore! Not long and you will be devouring a delicious moist pumpkin bread with a slight crunch cinnamon topping. Ahh!
Once the bread has finished baking, remove the bread pan from the machine, and allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
Then, carefully turn your pumpkin bread out on a pan or wire rack.
Let the loaf cool completely; then, slice.
This sweet pumpkin bread will beautifully decorate your table for fall! Hope you enjoy!
Tips for making this Pumpkin Bread with cinnamon crunch topping:
- Every bread machine is different in the way they label their settings. On my machine, I selected the ‘cake’ setting. This means, it’s NOT a yeast bread. Some machines have it listed as a “sweet quick bread cycle” meaning it is for active dry yeast breads (that wont work for this recipe) It’s very important that you check your bread machine manufacturer manual to find the correct setting for a non-yeast bread.
- Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides of the bread pan to make sure all of the flour has been incorporated before the baking begins.
- If your machine tends to not mix your ingredients all the way, or has soft spots in the center of the loaf, you can do two things. You can whisk your ingredients in a large bowl then dump into the machine to bake or, if your quick bread looks like it may not be done with the bread machine timer goes off, you can select the ‘bake’ cycle to cook a little longer. Always check with a toothpick or a fork before pulling the bread out of your machine.
- Use pot holders when removing the pan from the bread machine. These are the perfect small pot holders for your bread machine, they do not touch your bread when trying to lift it up out of the machine like oven mitts do.
- Another tip, try adding chocolate chips to this recipe. Yum!
- Make sure to use 100% pure pumpkin, whether it’s in a can or a homemade pumpkin puree. Just make sure you do not use pumpkin pie filling. It won’t turn out the same!
WHY USE THE BREAD MACHINE TO MAKE PUMPKIN BREAD AND NOT THE OVEN?
Although it takes a little longer, it is nice to have ‘cake’ or ‘quick bread’ made entirely hands off.
This is perfect for coming home too after church or for the little ones to help. Short recipe time + short attention spans = a good idea. If your home heats up during the summer like ours does, a bread machine is a great alternative to not heating your home up by turning on the oven.
Plus, using a Bread Machine gives you the flexibility of making homemade fresh breads without the extensive time and work involved. Whether you use your bread machine to knead and bake an entire loaf, use the cake setting to make sweet quick breads without yeast, or simply use it to knead and rise your dough cycle only (basically fool proof) it is going to make your dreams of making homemade bread for your family a reality.
