How to make homemade pizza dough in the bread machine
If you are just starting out making bread, this recipe is for you. Next, you should try these easy homemade dinner rolls, Psss.. you can use your bread machine for these, too!
So first, You are only making the dough for your pizza in the bread machine.
The bread machine uses the DOUGH cycle to mix and knead the dough for you. After that, you will dump the dough out of the bread machine pan onto a lightly floured surface and assemble the pizza in a pizza pan or cast iron skillet and bake it in your conventional oven.
Why use the bread machine to make pizza dough?
Homemade pizza is one our favorite foods to make for lunch, like almost a weekly staple around here! The kids really love helping make pizza, we’ve even considered making it our every Friday night dinner.
While we love having pizza ready by lunch, in the busy mornings of getting the kids fed breakfast, etc. It would be hard to stop and have the time to prepare dough and let rise.
Instead, you could have the bread machine do all the work for you. Toss the ingredients in the bread maker after breakfast, and by the time lunch time rolls around, All you have to do is assemble your pizza (the kids love to help) and throw it in the oven.
Anything to help my life run a little smoother, is a win for me. Our bread machine has made my life so much easier, I’ve been able to try loads of bread recipes while still being able to make our house a home in other areas of our life. See some of my favorite homemaking tips HERE.

Pss…dry ingredients go last!
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/3 cup of melted butter
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 3 3/4 cup bread flour (all-purpose flour will work too)
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast (or one package)
Press start then select dough setting on your bread machine.
STEP TWO: When the dough cycle is complete, place dough on a lightly floured surface, cut it in half, and shape each half into a smooth ball. Cover and allow to rest for about 10 minutes.
STEP THREE: Grease your pizza pan with oil or butter.
STEP FOUR: Use your fingers to spread your dough inside your cast iron or pizza skillet. I like to create a bit of a ridge around the outside for the crust. Brush the edges (or the whole pizza like I do) with garlic butter.
STEP FIVE: Spread pizza sauce and top with your favorite toppings.
STEP SIX: Bake for 13-15 minutes! Broil for 3 minutes to achieve the browning on top of the crust.
How many pizzas does the recipe make?
This recipe will make two pizzas. We like to make our own pizza and let the kids make theirs.
If you only need one pizza, you could freeze the dough for later or make your dough into bread sticks by shaping the dough and brushing with our 3 ingredient garlic butter.
Can I freeze homemade pizza dough for later?
Yes. Store dough in the fridge up to a week, or place in the freezer after it has risen and has been divided. Wrap with plastic wrap and then store in a freezer plastic bag.
When you are ready to use the dough, let it warm to room temperature and get puffy before you shape it. Then, proceed as usual to make your pizza.
Baking Schedule
10 AM: Dump all ingredients into bread machine.
11 AM: Shape dough. Add toppings. Bake.
12 PM: Enjoy for lunch!
Can I make this homemade pizza dough without a bread machine?
To make this recipe without a bread machine, just knead your dough for about 10 minutes by hand, or in a kitchen aid with a dough hook for about 5 minutes then let rise for 1 hour.

Where can I get a Bread Machine?
I bought my first bread machine for $7.99 (!!!) at our local goodwill, but I have been eye balling this bread machine over on Amazon.
You can also find them at thrift stores, garage sales, or even grandmas house.
Apparently, bread machines were really popular at one point and it’s easy to see why. I spent hours baking bread before I got my bread machine and although I like to work with my hands, It is really nice to have the option to dump ingredients in before church and come home to a hot loaf of sandwich bread (which is completely hands off, the machine will bake that type of loaf for you, too!)
Let’s bring bread machines back, ladies!
