After I made the decision to basically never buy store-bought buns and bread again, I didn’t take in to count the simple meals such as hot dogs that were supposed to be a quick week night dinner solution. How in the world am I going to have a quick week night dinner when I have to make my own hot dog buns?!
Luckily, I found a solution. My bread machine, of course! After I had made my own bread machine hamburger buns, I thought why couldn’t I just do the same for hot dog buns? I was not prepared for how pillowy soft, and delicious these simple hotdog buns would be. They truly take chili night to the next level!
Even better-There is no need for a special hot dog bun pan, Did you know that was a thing? I didn’t.
Is a bread machine worth it?
In my eyes, a bread machine is absolutely worth it.
As a mom of 3 who loves to make homemade bread for her family but has little spare time in the day to do it, I 100% could not make it through without my bread machine.
With little time in my day to dedicate to the actual art of bread making, the bread machine is nice helping hand. Plus, I really don’t mind walking in the door from carpool to the smell of fresh bread filling the house. Ahh, instantly makes all of our days better.
Why not just use a stand mixer?
As much as I enjoy the simplicity of my stand mixer, one of the drawbacks is that I need to keep a fairly close eye on what the dough is doing, which isn’t the case with my bread machine. I can basically dump the ingredients in, walk away and forget about it.
Ingredients
Here’s what you need to make these amazing bread machine hot dog buns:
- 1/2 cup Warm water
- 1/2 cup Warm milk
- 1 Egg
- 6 tbsp melted Butter
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 3 3/4 cup Bread flour (or all purpose flour)
- 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
- 1 tsp Salt
optional: 1 egg, 1 tbsp of water for an egg wash. An egg wash gives your buns that golden brown color.
How to make hot dog buns using your bread machine
1. To begin, place all of your ingredients inside the bread machine pan in the order listed. Dry ingredients go last.
2. Press the ‘dough’ setting on your bread machine then select start. Dough cycle usually takes around 1 hour to complete.
Once the dough cycle is complete, place dough onto a lightly floured surface. Shape into one long cylinder.
4. Divide the dough into 8-10 sections. 8 for large buns, 10 for medium-sized buns.
5. Place the shaped buns 1/2 in apart from each other on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. You want your buns to touch after rising and baking, this will yield in a soft pull apart buns.
6. Cover dough and allow the buns to rise for 30-45 minutes or until doubled in size.
7. Preheat oven to 350. Brush buns with an egg wash (1 TBSP WATER, 1 EGG, lightly whisked)
8. Cook buns for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
9. Brush with butter, sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, poppy seeds or simply leave plain.
What are the benefits of making your own bread?
Well for one, it taste absolutely amazing but the biggest benefit for making your own bread would be to avoid the high fructose corn syrup and preservatives that are found in store-bought bread.
Ever noticed how store-bought buns almost never get moldy? If you’ve baked your own bread before, then you know it’s absolutely normal for bread to grow mold opretty fast (if it even last long enough!) which means it’s absolutely not normal for your bread to be eatable for months. Yep, that would be those preservatives working.
It’s adaptable:
Homemade bread can be adapted to suit your own preferences, You can go crazy with the hundreds of different ways you can use the same dough. I actually have an ebook on 10 ways to use this exact dough, find it HERE.
Most of my bread recipes use exactly the same base dough recipe. You can throw seeds in, add garlic and herbs, a handful of cheese, or dried fruit. I even use my bread dough for pizza. It’s limitless.
Do I need to use bread flour when making these hot dog buns?
The difference between bread flour and all purpose flour is the protein content. Bread flour will produce a fluffier like texture, which is great for homemade bread! When baking bread in your bread machine, use bread flour when available but it is okay to use all purpose if you don’t have bread flour on hand. Substitute all-purpose flour with a 1:1 ratio when bread flour is unavailable.
Can you freeze these hot dog buns?
Absolutely! To freeze your buns, follow the steps above until you have formed your cylinder shape. Once your rolls are formed, place them on a baking sheet and into the freezer for 24 hours. After frozen, transfer them to a plastic bag. When you are ready for your buns, let them thaw and rise on the counter for 4-5 hrs then bake as normal.
Can I make these hot dog buns without a Bread machine?
To make this recipe without a bread machine, just knead your dough for about 10 minutes by hand, or in the bowl of a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment for about 5 minutes then let the dough rise for 1 hour. Following the same directions to shape and bake from above, or on the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
Is the dough for hot dog buns, the same for hamburger buns?
Yes, you can make hamburger buns with this recipe. Just form the dough into a round instead of a long oval. I have step by step on how to make hamburger buns here.
